Grown-Up Tips

Grown-up Pro TipS

  • This is a very popular party appetizer in our house. To bring to a party, just triple the recipe (6 avocados, 6 limes, etc..). And to keep it from turning brown before the party, try these tricks.

  • How can you tell if an avocado is ripe? A few hints:

    • Tends to be turning a dark green color or brown-ish instead of a uniform bright green color

    • Gives to gentle pressure when you squeeze it. If it’s rock hard, it’s not ripe yet. If it’s really soft and mushy, it’s over ripe.

  • How to ripen and store avocados

    • If it’s the right amount of ripe: store on your counter, eat today or tomorrow

    • To ripen faster: store in a brown paper bag at room temperature (not in your fridge)

    • To ripen more slowly: if it’s already ripe and you won’t eat it today or tomorrow, store in your fridge to slow down the ripening process

  • For kids that might find “chunky” guacamole challenging:

    • Skip the tomatoes and pulse the mixture in a food processor at the end of the recipe. It will make a smoother guacamole, which may make it easier for some kids to try it.

This Recipe is Dietician Approved!

Did you know that fat is an essential nutrient for a child’s development? 30-40% of the diet for 1-3 year olds needs to come from fat and kids ages four and older continue to need 25-35% of their diet to be made up of fat until adulthood. Healthy sources of fat like avocados, nuts, seeds, fatty fish like salmon, and vegetable oils are all excellent ways to boost their fat intake!
