Wonderful Whole Wheat Waffles

  1. You'll mix the batter
  2. The grown-up makes the waffles using a waffle iron while the kid prepares the fruit topping

  • We like serving these with ricotta on top for some protein to balance out the carbs. It will help keep you fuller for longer (and it’s tasty!)

Shopping List

  • 2 eggs

  • Milk (1 ¾ cups, your choice of milk)

  • Butter (½ a stick)

  • Ricotta (16 oz container, optional for serving)

  • Whole Wheat Flour (1 ½ cups)

  • Honey (1 tablespoon)

  • All natural maple syrup or honey (for serving)

  • Ground cinnamon

  • Baking Soda

  • Baking Powder

  • Salt

  • Fruit for serving

    • Winter: 4 clementines

    • Summer: 1 package blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries

  • Optional: non-stick spray for waffle iron

  • Wash hands

  • Collect Ingredients

    • 2 eggs

    • Milk (1 ¾ cups, your choice of milk)

    • Butter (½ a stick)

    • Whole Wheat Flour (1 ½ cups)

    • Honey (1 tablespoon)

    • Ground cinnamon

    • Baking Soda

    • Baking Powder

    • Salt

    • Optional: non-stick spray for waffle iron

    • Honey or all natural maple syrup

    • Fruit

      • Winter: 4 Clementines

      • Summer: 1 package blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries

    • Ricotta (16 oz container)

  • Collect Tools

    • Waffle iron

    • Baking sheet (for keeping waffles warm)

    • Small microwave safe bowl

    • Liquid measuring cup

    • Measuring spoons (1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, ½ teaspoon, ¼ teaspoon, ⅛ teaspoon)

    • Measuring cups (1 cup, ½ cup)

    • Butter knife

    • Whisk

    • Spatula

  • Grown-up: Preheat waffle iron and oven

    • Preheat your waffle iron.

    • Preheat oven to 200F (to keep waffles warm as you make the whole batch)

  • Measure 1 ¾ cups milk

    • With liquid measuring cup

    • Pour into large mixing bowl

  • Measure 1 tablespoon honey

    • Add to same mixing bowl

  • Measure ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

    • Level off with butter knife

    • Add to same mixing bowl

  • Measure ¼ teaspoon baking soda

    • Level off with butter knife

    • Add to same mixing bowl

  • Measure 4 Tablespoons butter

    • With the wrapper still on the stick of butter, cut with butter knife at the 4 tablespoon line

    • Unwrap butter

  • Melt butter

    • Put measured butter into microwave safe bowl

    • Microwave for 45 seconds

  • Germ alert

    • You’re about to crack 2 eggs. Eggs have germs that can make your tummy sick, so don’t taste raw eggs and make sure to wash your hands after you touch them.

  • Add 2 eggs to batter

    • Crack 2 eggs into the mixing bowl

  • Wash hands and work surface

  • Add melted butter

    • Get the butter from the microwave

    • Pour into large mixing bowl 

  • Whisk everything together
  • Measure 1 ½ cups whole-wheat flour

    • 1 cup, then ½ cup

    • Level with knife to make sure you’re measuring accurately

    • Add to mixing bowl

  • Measure 2 teaspoons baking powder

    • 1 teaspoon, 2 times

    • Add to mixing bowl

  • Measure 1/8 teaspoon salt

    • Add to mixing bowl

  • Whisk everything together

  • Heat alert!

    • The waffle iron is very, very hot. Don’t touch the waffle iron unless your grown-up gives you permission.

  • Grown-up: Cook the waffles

    • Spray with nonstick spray, if your waffle iron requires it

    • Follow your waffle iron instructions for quantity and cook time (mine, a double square shape, takes ⅓ cup per square and cooks for 3 minutes)

    • The waffle is done when the steam stops coming out of the iron

    • Use spatula to remove the finished waffles

    • Put finished waffles on a baking sheet in the warm oven to keep warm

  • Kid: While grownup makes waffles, prepare the fruit topping and set the table

    • Peel 4 clementines and separates segments, or wash berry container

  • Top with pure maple syrup or honey(optional).

  • Top with a few spoonfuls of ricotta and fruit.
