Mexican Hot Cocoa

  • Can be made vegan (by using nut milk)

  • We like this recipe with regular cow’s milk, but it also works with soy and nut milks

Grown-up Pro Tips

  • This recipe is for a single serving of hot cocoa. To make for a crowd, multiply the quantities and heat on the stovetop instead of in the microwave.

Shopping List

  • Milk (any kind, you’ll need 1.5 cups)

  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (3 tablespoons)

  • Vanilla extract (¾ teaspoon)

  • Honey (1 tablespoon)

  • Ground cinnamon (3 tablespoons)

  • Chili powder (pinch)

  • Microwave
  • Mug

Ready to cook? Instructions below

  • Wash hands

  • Collect Ingredients

    • Milk

    • Unsweetened cocoa powder

    • Vanilla extract

    • Honey

    • Ground cinnamon

    • Chili powder

  • Collect tools

    • Liquid measuring cup (microwave safe)

    • Measuring spoons (tablespoon, ¼ teaspoon)

    • Small whisk or spoon

    • Mug

  • Pour 1 ½ cups milk into a liquid measuring cup
  • Measure 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

    • 1 Tablespoon, 3 times

    • Add to measuring cup with the milk

  • Measure 1 tablespoon honey

    • Add to cup

  • Measure ¾ teaspoons cinnamon

    • ¼ teaspoon, 3 times

    • Add to measuring cup

  • Measure ¾ teaspoons vanilla extract

    • ¼ teaspoons, 3 times

    • Add to cup

  • Add a pinch of chili powder

    • Start with a small pinch, you can always add more later!

  • Use a small whisk or spoon to stir

    • Most of the chocolate will stay on top, that’s okay!

  • Put in microwave for 1:30

  • Whisk/stir again

  • Carefully pour into mug

    • (Grown-up: might need to help with this)

  • Taste

    • Is it spicy enough? If not, try adding a bit more chili powder
