Hummus

Overview

Serves 4 as a snack

25 minutes prep time

The rundown:

  1. You'll alternate between adding ingredients to the food processor/blender and blending.
  2. No heat required!

Grown-up Pro Tips

  • Not familiar with tahini? You can find it in most big grocery stores- look in the condiments aisle near specialty olives or in the ethnic foods aisle

Shopping List

  • Chickpeas: 1 14-oz can low-sodium chickpeas (also called “garbanzo beans”)

  • Tahini (you’ll need ¼ cup)

  • 1 lemon

  • 1 clove garlic

  • Fresh dill

  • Your favorite dippers (some we like: whole wheat crackers, whole wheat pita, baby carrots, baby bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers)

  • Spices:

    • Ground cumin

    • Paprika

  • Pantry:

    • Olive oil

    • Salt

Special Tools 

  • Food processor (or blender)

Ready to cook? Instructions below

  • Wash hands

  • Collect ingredients

    • 1 14-oz can low-sodium chickpeas
    • Tahini
    • 1 lemon
    • 1 clove garlic
    • Fresh dill
    • Ground cumin
    • Paprika
    • Olive oil
    • Salt
  • Collect tools

    • Food processor (or blender)
    • Kid chef knife (or butter knife)
    • Cutting board
    • Colander
    • Liquid measuring cup
    • ¼ cup measuring cup
    • Measuring spoons (½ teaspoon, Tablespoon)
    • Spoon
    • Mixing spatula
    • Small bowl (to serve)
  • Grown-up: Set up food processor with S-blade

    • Or blender, but it will be smoother in a processor

  • Measure out ¼ cup tahini

    • Scoop with spoon into ¼ cup measuring cup

    • Scoop from measuring cup into processor

  • Add juice from 1 lemon

    • Cut lemon in half with kid safe chef knife

    • Squeeze juice from both halves into food processor. Squeeze it over your other hand to catch the seeds

  • Blend

    • Grown-up: Place cover on food processor

    • Kid: Press the on button. Count to 30, then turn it off.

    • Grownup: Might need to scrape down sides using mixing spatula. Replace cover and process for another 30 seconds.

  • Crush 1 garlic clove

    • Separate 1 clove from the garlic bulb

    • Smash garlic with chickpea can

    • Peel off skin

  • Add garlic

    • Smell the garlic- yum!

    • Add down chute of food processor

  • Measure ¼ cup olive oil

    • Measure olive oil with liquid measuring cup

    • Add down chute of food processor

  • Add ½ teaspoon cumin

    • Smell cumin- what does it smell like?

    • Measure ½ teaspoon cumin and add down chute

  • Add ½ teaspoon salt

    • Measure ½ tsp salt

    • Add down chute

  • Blend again

    • Grown-up: Replace cover

    • Kid: Press the on button. Count to 30, then turn it off.

    • Grownup: Scrape down sides, replace cover

    • Kid: turn it on for another 30 seconds

  • Wash chickpeas

    • Open one can of chickpeas, dump into a colander

    • Rinse until all the chickpea juice is gone

  • Pour chickpeas

    • Grown-up: open processor

    • Kid: Pour chickpeas into food processor

  • Blend again

    • Grown-up: replace cover

    • Kid: turn the food processor on. Count to 60! Turn it off.

  • Wash dill

    • Wash a small bunch of fresh dill

    • Taste some. What does it taste like?

  • Add dill

    • Pick leaves off of stems, until you have about 2 Tablespoons of dill leaves

    • Add down the chute of the food processor

  • Blend one last time

    • Grown-up: Replace cover

    • Kid: turn the food processor on. Count to 60! Turn it off.

    • Grown-up: taste hummus. If the hummus is too thick, add a small bit of water and process again.

  • Serve

    • Grown-up : scrape with a spatula into a medium bowl for serving

    • Kid: sprinkle paprika on top (however much you’d like)

    • Serve with whatever you have: whole wheat crackers, whole wheat pita, baby carrots, baby bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.
