Great Green Guacamole



Serves 4 as a snack

30 minutes prep time

The rundown:

  1. You'll scoop out 2 avocados, cut tomatoes and limes, and measure spices
  2. This is founder Ashley's secret guacamole recipe- no longer secret!

Grown-up Pro Tips

  • This is a very popular party appetizer in our house. To bring to a party, triple the recipe (6 avocados, 6 limes, etc..).
  • Not sure how to shop for avocados?
    • Ripe avocados should feel soft when you squeeze them gently. Rock hard ones will be hard to mash and won't be as tasty.
    • They'll probably also have started to turn brown (instead of being a bright green color).

Shopping List

  • 2 ripe avocados

  • 2 tomatoes (2 roma, or 2 medium beefsteak, or 1 large beefsteak)

  • 2 limes

  • Fresh cilantro (you’ll use a handful)

  • Your favorite dippers (some we like: whole wheat crackers, baby carrots, baby bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers)

  • Spices

    • Garlic powder

    • Cumin

  • Pantry

    • Salt

    • Pepper

  • None!

Ready to cook? Instructions below

  • Wash hands


  • Collect ingredients

    • 2 ripe avocados

    • 2 tomatoes (roma or beefsteak)

    • 2 limes

    • Fresh cilantro

    • Garlic powder

    • Cumin

    • Salt

    • Pepper

  • Collect tools

    • Kid chef knife (or butter knife)
    • Grown-up chef knife
    • Cutting board
    • Medium mixing bowl
    • Potato masher or fork
    • Measuring spoons (teaspoon, ½ teaspoon, ¼ teaspoon)
    • Spoon
  • Cut 2 avocados in half

    • Using kid chef-knife, cut into the avocado. Twist it around with your hand as you cut around the avocado. When you’ve made a cut all the way around, pull the 2 halves apart

    • (Grown-up: May need to help with grown-up chef knife)

  • Scoop the avocado

    • Using a spoon, scoop the inside of the avocado into a medium bowl

    • Remove the pits

  • Mash the avocado

    • Use a potato masher or fork

  • Wash 2 tomatoes

  • Cut 2 tomatoes into chunks

    • Cut off the tops, put tomatoes on a cutting board with the cut side down

    • Cut into strips

    • Lay the strips flat on the board

    • Cut the strips into big chunks

  • Stir tomatoes

    • Add tomatoes to the medium bowl with the avocado

    • Stir

  • Cut 2 limes

    • Roll them on counter first, pressing down (it helps get more juice out)

    • Cut in half (grown-up: may have to help with grown-up chef knife)

  • Squeeze 1 lime into bowl

  • Stir and taste!

    • Is it the right amount of lime? Not enough?

    • Add the second lime, one half at a time, until it tastes good to you.

  • Measure 1 teaspoon ground cumin

    • Pour into bowl

  • Measure ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

    • Pour into bowl

  • Measure ½ teaspoon salt

    • Pour into bowl

  • Add a few shakes of pepper

  • Stir

  • Wash cilantro

    • Grab a handful from the bunch

    • Wash carefully- sometimes cilantro can be sandy!

  • Add cilantro

    • Pick the leaves off the stems

    • Tear them to make them a little smaller, add to bowl

  • Stir

  • Nom with favorite dippers

    • Some we like: whole wheat crackers, baby carrots, baby bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers
